Monday 25th August 2008Amphibian Ark Day IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN (or yellow, or red, or blue, or mottled, or........)
The world's amphibians are facing an extinction crisis. Conservationists across the planet are working together to find solutions to the problems of habitat loss, climate change and disease that threaten to wipe out hundreds of species of frogs, toads, newts, salamanders and caecilians. The zoo community have a vital role to play. The most critically endangered species are being taken into specially built biosecure units where they can be bred and kept safe until the problems are under control. This enormous project has been aptly christened the Amphibian Ark, and has been adopted by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) as their conservation campaign for 2008.
Here at the IOW Zoo we have been busy throughout the year, raising funds for 2008 Year of the Frog. Our fundraising efforts culminate today, August Bank Holiday, with a packed day of frog-themed activities.
Come along and join in the fun!
