The Isle of Wight Zoo is currently piloting an internship scheme. Placements are for a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of one year and are
unpaid. Interns must be at least eighteen years old and are responsible for organising and funding their own travel and accommodation. For safety reasons, all interns are required to have a high standard of spoken English. The work is physically demanding, so interns will need to be fit and healthy. A typical placement would include time working alongside animal keepers in all sections, as well as an opportunity for those interested in conservation education to spend some time in the education department.
If you would like to apply for a place on the scheme please send your CV and a covering letter to the education department at the address below (electronic submission by email is acceptable). In your covering letter you should explain the following:
- What do you hope to do and to achieve during your internship?
- Why have you chosen to undertake an internship in a zoo?
- What are your views on the role of zoos in conservation?
- What are you hoping to do in your career after you graduate?
- Why have you chosen to apply for a placement at the Isle of Wight Zoo?
- How long a placement are you hoping for and what date would you be available to start?
Competition for internship places is high and unfortunately not all applicants are successful. Priority is given to students or graduates who are intending to pursue a career in zoos. You will usually be informed whether or not we are able to offer you an interview within two weeks of us receiving your CV and application letter.
