Georgie's Great South Run

Isle of Wight Zoo tour guide Georgia McCarthy raised over £500 for tiger conservation last year by completing the Great south Run, but she didn’t stop there. Instead of hanging up her running shoes she has decided to enter the 10 mile race again, and raise even more money for wild tigers.

Georgia is once again raising money for Global Tiger Patrol. They are the charity who run the Isle of Wight Zoo’s project supporting local advocacy for tiger conservation in Karnakata, India. The zoo is the sole funder of the project, donating £10800 a year.

Georgie said: "I am once again going to drag my poor old withered and battered body around a 10 mile course in Southsea in aid of one of the amazing projects that is run by Global Tiger Patrol and fully funded by the Isle of Wight Zoo. The project is situated in the Western Ghats of India which is one of the only areas across the tigers’ range where numbers are on the increase slowly but surely. Last year D.V Ghirish and his team helped to identify illegal activity in the forests of the area and as a result it is estimated that 30 tigers were prevented from being killed.

I have one of the best jobs in world, as a presenter at the Isle of Wight Zoo where I can tell our visitors not just about our tigers, but how they are helping tigers in the wild just by visiting us in Sandown, and of course I also get to work up close and personal with the cats too."

Around 20000 people are expected to participate in the road race, which is now in its 22nd year.
