Goodbye to Snoopy

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Snoopy the African lion.

On Thursday 18th October he underwent what we hoped would be routine dental surgery. Sadly, the specialist discovered an inoperable tumour around the tooth. His passing was devastating news for the whole team and will leave a big gap in zoo life.

Snoopy was born at Blair Drummond Safari Park, and came to the Isle of Wight Zoo with his litter-mate Charlie Brown when they were both 18 months old. Snoopy always had a massive personality and was never shy in asserting himself. As the dominant male, it was his job to lead the lions in their evening roaring, which could be heard right across the town.

Snoopy and Charlie never spent a day apart, and Charlie was very reliant on his brother for a sense of security. We will be keeping a very close eye on him over the coming weeks, and we hope that lioness Nahla, who lives next door, will provide some much-needed company.
